Hey guys I was wondering if any of you know any good air cooler that work out of the box with ryzen? Is there any that use the backplate that comes with the motherboard? I've been using the wraith spire that came with my 1700, but I want to overclock it now. I tried doing this with the stock cooler, but temps spiked up way too high (85-90C @1.35v) I have the NZXT H440 and 16 GB of G SKILL TRIDENT Z RGB. I don't know if clearance will be any issue. My budget is 100$ USD, thanks!

Overclocking will always make your CPU temps spike up. I do question however if the thermal compound isn't applied the best way possible (not sure if stock Ryzen coolers have pre-applied compound or not) since you are hitting 85-90c. I would be very careful as below 90c is what AMD lists as "safe" where it's max temp looks to be closer to 95c.

Are you dead set on an air cooler? If you want an AIO you can get a Corsair H100i for exactly $99.99 or a Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240; however, I have never personally used a MasterLiquid 240 so that may be something to research. There are single radiator CPU mounts for $60-$80, but double rad has always been a to-go for me, plus single rad just looks weird unless the case only has support for a single rad/fan.

Onto air coolers:

CRYORIG H7
Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
Noctua NH-D14 or D15 (if you don't mind the colour on either)

Check to make sure they fit your motherboard (motherboard wasn't listed) just to make sure the mounting adapter/brackets will support the cooler before you buy.

I have the Asus Crosshair hero VI. I'm pretty set on an air cooler. I'm thinking of getting the Noctua NH-D15 SE. Do you think it will have problems with hitting my ram? I have G skill Trident Z RGB

You'll definitely be good in terms of spacing; however, I think you may have to be in single fan mode instead of dual fan mode (if you wanted to mount fans to the right for some reason.) So you can attach 2 fans on here, maybeeeeeeeeee even getting away with 3 in certain instances and provided you happen to have the extra mounting tools around. If RAM spacing is cutting it close that way, you can put one fan dead center and be good. The heatsinks have cut-ins on the bottom to allow headway for RAM. You 100% can mount the fan in the dead center of the heatsinks. Dual fan mode only supports RAM of 32mm, so if the G Skill Trident Z RGB measures above that, you will be stuck in single fan mode.

To fix this issue, you can add in 120mm fans instead of 140mm, but that kind of becomes a waste as you need to waste more money. The best solution would be to adjust the fan placement.

So as seen in that diagram, the normal mounting position is pretty much dead center on the end heatsink where the bottom and top of the fan equally run off. You can mount it a little higher so the bottom of the fan lines up perfectly with the heatsink or at least enough room for RAM clearance. This will have more running off the top but will suffice for the RAM spacing; however, at this point you need to be careful for closing the case since now the fan "increased" in height.

Alternatively, since your motherboard has the DIMM slots to the right of the motherboard, you can just slap them there and mount the dual fans, one dead center, one far left like most people do and be good to go without worrying about everything I typed up lol

Got my cooler today and it fit perfectly and was easy to install. Unfortunately when I was taking out the stock cooler the cpu came out as well and bent a pin. I looked some videos up and was able to bend it back with a super flat screw driver. My pc booted and I ran prime95, it's been running for about 2 hours now and max temp is 68-69C @3.8 Ghz and 1.35 volts! I appreciate your help!
