The National minimum wage act of 1998 means that anyone who fits the given criteria gets at least a set wage. This even fits part-time, trainee's, offshore, one-day hires, apprentices and foreign workers. The minimum wage at the moment is shown below:

I think tipping is an extremely crude way of shorting your workers especially if a company then splits the tips at the end of the shift. I will only tip if its a pathetic amount meaning I will be left with coppers (small change) or if they have performed a miracle in front of my eyes.

Damn u lucky bro. Your countries' minimum wage gets reviewed every April. Minimum wage in the USA has been $7.25 since 2009 and $7.25 here is equivalent to the apprentice wages in the U.K. Since the cost of living is insane now. ($7 for a gallon of milk) I live in a cheap part of the country and housing is $1000 a month on average for a 1 bedroom apartment. rip.
I agree. Minimum wage in the US blows. Plus, the living expenses for being in a college town in ridiculous but what can ya do. Gotta live somewhere besides the dorms

We have been getting raises in minimum wage quite a bit recently. Luckily in my area the cost of living is great. In comparison to your $7 a gallon of milk, our milk is £1 for 2.27L so £2 for approx 1 gallon which is around $2.62. But if you was to compare my area to London then it would be a similar story to yourself in terms of cost of living which is why alot of jobs are higher paying within London.
The concept of tipping leaves the burden of paying wages on the customers gratitude, this would be fine if the base wage was enough to cover an average standard of living. It seems silly to me that if I pay £30 for an average meal that I then need to pay an extra £5+ to cover the wages of the staff.

I've been waiting tables since I was 14, and never have I been paid over $3/hr base pay, and taxes make that paycheck essentially non-existent, so tips are the only place their money comes from. People have no idea how influential a good tipper can be until they've actually been a server.
