14 Peacekeepers have lost their lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

thought to have been carried out by rebels from the anti-government Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) group. Rebels attacked a peacekeeping base in North Kivu Province of the DRC which also cost the lives of 5 Congolese soldiers and injured 53 others.

UN spokesman Farhan Haq said the dead UN peacekeepers were mainly from Tanzania.
He added: "It's a very huge attack, certainly the worst in recent memory."

UN secretary general Antonio Guterres expressed his "heartbreak" over the attack, which he described as a war crime.

He said: "I call on the DRC authorities to investigate this incident and swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice. There must be no impunity for such assaults, here or anywhere else.

My thoughts
I think this attack is a cowardly act against U.N Peacekeepers who try to bring stability and peace to the country. I feel sick from reading that as my dream is to be a U.N Peacekeeper in the Irish Defense Forces. Prayers to the families who have lost someone in the attack. This also makes me want to be a peacekeeper even more. I know what i'm signing up for and I damn well want this to stop.. but sadly it's human nature to be violent..
