So, I have a laptop with a Radeon R5 gpu and was looking at what games need. My video ram is 4gb and dedicated is 512mb apparently.

My question is: what is the difference between dedicated video ram and video ram?

Dedicated video memory is the amount of memory that the gpu has. Everything else is shared by the system from your RAM. So for example. My 1080Ti has 11GB of dedicated memory. My system itself has 16Gb of RAM. My computer shares 8GB of its memory to the videocard. Resulting in 19GB of total graphics memory. However most games will only use the dedicated memory so any game you plan on playing should have a minimum requirement of 512MB of video memory.

(Windows reports that my GPU has 1more gb of RAM than it really does, I have no idea why this is. GPU-Z detects it properly)
