Thirteen people, including children, were killed when helicopter crashes on Mexico whilst surveying damage from a recent earthquake, at a height of about 130ft. The earthquake itself had caused no deaths, but left hundreds of damage to buildings leaving over a million people without power

The helicopter was carrying officials including the Mexican interior minister and the governor of the state before crashing on top of 2 vehicles injuring 7 pedestrians on the ground

The aircraft's pilot lost control as it was coming in to land, Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete said.

The 7.2-magnitude quake's epicentre was in Oaxaca but it shook buildings in Mexico City, 350km (217 miles) away.

No deaths have been reported in the earthquake itself.

Officials said the military helicopter had crashed on top of several vans carrying earthquake survivors in a field while trying to land in the village of Santiago Jamiltepec, not far from the epicentre.

Witnesses say the village had been affected by a power cut and it was dark when the helicopter approached to land.

It circled the village several times, raising a thick cloud of dust and further reducing visibility.

Very sad to hear.

People survived the earthquake just to be killed by a helicopter. Such a tragedy.

Any death is really sad to hear cant imagine what their families are going through. Nothing is happy on the news always the sad things. Never happy stories like a dog saved a child from a river etc.. but yet again it's sad. That must be so terrifying.

Yeah I heard about this earthquake as soon as it struck, a shame the pilot couldn't keep control my prayers are out to them all.
