Getting a new car that must be petrol but the model would be around 2007.

Due to petrol cars not lasting long compared to diesels, what is a good mileage of car to buy?

Really depends on how taken care of the car was. My 07 has 147k on it and can run another 100k if I wanted it to.

Look for rust spots, ask about maintenance schedules. Major work done to the vehicle. Just be smart when car shopping.

As Kylo stated, it depends on how well maintained the vehicle was. Depending on your area, I'd look for rust areas, my daily has around 170k, and it runs like a champ.
What I do when I look at a vehicle, in order:
1.) Ask if they have all paperwork for maintenance that's been done to the vehicle.
2.) Look at mileage, general I go for something around 75k-100k.
3.) Look for rust areas
4.) Quick walk around to inspect body lines and panels.
5.) Pop the hood look at the state of the engine and accessories.
6.) Start the vehicle and listen for any noises or clanks.
If all is good if they have paperwork and it meets everything I stated and it's well taken care of normally they can go 200k+

200k miles is generally when gassers are considered "dangerous" for a lack of better description. I look at 10k miles at $1k, so if there's a car with 150k miles, I'd pay $5k and expect to get it to 200k miles before it blows up.

This is both true and not true.
Non well maintained vehicles, 200k is where they die.
But, I used to have a truck that still had the original motor at 350k before big problems began to show themselves. It all depends on how well you take care of your vehicles, and don't cheap out on replacement parts and tune ups.

If I remember correctly (assuming the OP is from UK) it is the same, except they have overall higher octane.
