It has been a great week for gamers, what with the Game Developers Conference having left us with a pile of news including new game announcements, trailers, gameplay clips and future updates, and one such update that will be coming to Fortnite's Battle Royale game mode. I think it is safe to assume that anyone who likes to play video games have played, or at least heard of Fortnite; more specifically the Battle Royale game mode which pits up to 100 players against each other in a straight up fight to the death.

Well it seems that the guys at Epic are planning on giving a facelift to the game on the Xbox One X which, currently running at 1800p will soon enough reach a 4K resolution. During their presentation at the GDC which centres around how they are optimizing Unreal Engine 4 to better suit the game, one slide depicted their goal:

TAAU or not for short, Temporal Anti-Aliasing Unsampling is designed to negate the effects of temporal aliasing which is caused by a low sampling rate and, as an example results in the jagged movement of objects coming in to view as opposed to seamlessly fading in by reconstructing a frame buffer to hide the change in resolution. As for the dynamic resolution scaler highlighted in the third column, this is something that Epic themselves have added as to maintain a steady frame rate during the more demanding bits of the game; most notably the skydiving introduction.

This will be a game changer, not only by providing crisper graphics for the console, it will also put it even further ahead of the game than the PlayStation 4 version that is stuck at a measly 1080p definition. Another good thing to come from the work Epic Games are doing is that they are taking great strides in building upon Unreal Engine 4 and bettering it which, eventually, will prove beneficial towards other game developers utilizing the engine. No date has been mentioned for this, and it isn't something that needs to be rushed; Epic can take as long as they need on this one.
