I just started my placement at a nursing home for school and I have never worked night shifts.
So does anyone have any tips for staying awake and alert durning a night shift?

I worked at Walmart as a stock associate overnight and I tapped out after 3 weeks because I couldn't sleep during the day.
My advice: Drink caffeine

I used to work overnights at a grocery store, coffee. A lot of coffee and energy drinks.

Get used to sleeping during the day, make sure your roommates/parents/sibilants/whatever applies understands your situation and is willing to quiet down/help you sleep.
Take sleep medicine/melatonin to get to sleep and get your sleep schedule figured out. Surviving off caffeine and little sleep is too unhealthy.

Sleep during the day, that way you will be up all night and having drinks that contain caffeine can help you stay awake and alert.
Example: Coffee, Tea, Energy drinks, etc.

I'd have something with caffeine to boost ya a little bit.
Also just keep yourself occupied at all times, once you sit down and begin to feel tired, it just gets more and more from there.

Coffee, energy drinks, the usual listed above.
No matter how tired you are, exercise will not keep you awake, it will only give you a short burst and you'll be even more tired at the end.
Avoid power naps, as you'll feel refreshed straight after them but will again be drowsy and more tired after you've 'woken up'.
If you're drinking coffee, make sure you have a steady stream, you don't want an hour break after a coffee, as this is the point where the caffeine comedown will most likely hit you, keep yourself topped up so you don't hit that wall.

All you really need is a set sleep schedule. I use to love night shift, now I'm a morning person.

It just depends on you really, I currently work nights as a welder and you just need to keep occupied during you're first few days. Once you get a set sleep schedule you'll be alright, I work from 7pm-7am and I'm off 2 on 2 off 3 and it flips. The weekends I get off I sleep till noonish and get up and have a regular day. Stay up late but not like I would if I was at work. The night before I go back I'll stay up till 7 am and go to bed and be ready for work.
