You'll lose weight if you eat less calories than you need. The difference between eating no calories (water fast) and eating slightly less calories, is that your body will not retain muscle if you're eating no calories.

As a male specifically, you don't want to be losing muscle when it doesn't need to be lost and you can guarentee with 0 calories and 0g of protein per day (even if it's only a few days) you will lose muscle mass.

If you're just trying to lose weight for summer, eat slightly less than your TDEE and the weight will come off quite quickly, providing you're going to the gym and eating a decent amount of protein, you should be able to retain most of your muscle mass too.

How do you feel about having a meal a day then fasting maybe once or twice a week?

I don't see the point in jumping straight into a hardcore diet that is literally only used for fast results. Unless you're willing to eat 2x protein and workout 4x as much after the water diet to make up for the muscle you've lost, there really won't be any point.

The main way to have stable weight loss without losing muscle mass would be to slowly decrease the number of calories you intake while increasing the amount of exercise. If you see you are not losing weight, keep your amount of exercise the same but decrease the calories further. Test your weight a week at a time decreasing calories by maybe 3-400 each week. One week you'll see that you start losing weight, but you don't want it to be too drastic.

It really depends on your goals to be honest.

If you're trying to lose as much weight as possible in the shortest time frame, then fasting and eating in an extreme calorie defecit is the way to go. For most people, the idea is not just to lose weight though, it's to burn fat.

If you're eating nothing then a single meal will make very little difference. Your body will still be in starvation mode and it will use your muscle and fat for energy but at a slightly lower rate.

I know it's far more effort to count calories and work out your TDEE and stick to a diet but it would definatley be worth it in the long run. If you water fast and end up hitting your target weight after a few weeks, you could be at a higher weight with more muscle and less fat if you did a proper diet and counted your macros.

Try keto, just get an app to keep track of what you eat. Really easy, you don't need to stick to it too much at all, just cut out bread and grains like pasta, and eat chicken and salmon for your meat.

Depends how long you plan to do it, if you mean total water fasting, three days straight with ample sleep is considered safe

Anything over five days would see you become ill, nothing traumatic or life threatening with mineral deficiency

Ten days+ you'll most likely catch an infection like the common cold (50% more likely than the average person) seeing both minerals and vitamins are now gone your immune system throws a tantrum and you white count will fall

If you want to do this every few months go for the three day water fast, get your body used to it, then go for the five, make sure you do a lot of five day fasts before taking on a ten day fast

Water fasts are really awesome for detoxing your body from everything, whether it be from junk food, alcohol, excess sugar, general unhealthy lifestyle

Don't start a water fast if you think you've got an infection(the common cold still counts here) or the days after

On the five day fasts when you get to them, to keep yourself more on target take broad spectrum vitamins(pick these up at your local pharmacy, most likely labeled multi vitamin)

Be safe and any other questions shoot me a PM
