I heard there was an avatar update that is harmless but if I'm on the latest dash, shouldn't that be in the dash already? I don't see the avatars though so maybe that's what it is but I was just online 5 mins ago

If you was just online then that sounds very much like an avatar update. Always check if the avatar are ghosts(completely grey) and always check your dashboard version which could be found in console settings. If it is an avatar update then it is safe for you to accept it.
