it launches up fine, when i press multiplayer im stuck on a black screen, add title updates and everything

Might be a bad rip of the ISO, that is if you downloaded it from the web. If it's a clean rip from your disc, then you've got the TU in the wrong place, or your .xex file isn't the correct one. Double check to ensure you're using the latest and greatest TU / default_mp.xex!

best thing you could do, instead of download ISO's online, Go into a store like CeX (UK) and buy it then download it to your xbox and then return it.
Only thing is that I have only downloaded my xbox games when I used to play xbox 360 and I don't know if they can detect if it has been ripped/download or whatever.
