It wouldn't be a Fortnite event if Epic didn't design a way to make money from it, and that appears to be what they're doing by designing one of the game's coolest skins to date.
Fortnitemares marks the arrival of not only Cube monsters that spawn on the map, but also someone to hunt them. That would be Deadfire, the new legendary skin that is sort of a counterpart to Calamity, the season 6 Tier 1 skin, but also his own thing.
Deadfire starts off as a fairly normal looking cowboy, but both he and his pickaxe, the dark shard, are reactive, meaning that they will change in appearance the more you play. You get them to change throughout a match by doing damage to either opponents or Cube monsters, or by outliving other players.
Here's what Deadfire looks like before you start changing:
Along with his Pickaxe, the "Dark Shard":
And after one in-between phase (see the lead image), you will get the full-on "he's on fire" Deadfire treatment which looks like this:
Pretty cool, right?
Deadfire is a legendary skin and his axe is epic, meaning that they cost 2,000 and 1,200 V-bucks respectively. Even getting the $25 V-bucks bundle won't be enough to get them both, so the total cost is probably closer to $30. But hey, the game is free, right? Right??
This is clearly how Epic wants to make money from Fortnitemares. Deadfire is of course not mandatory for this event. You can play Fortnitemares (which has replaced all normal battle royale modes) with any skin, and complete the challenges too for Deadfire's glider. But no other skins will react over the course of a match like Deadfire's does, which is clearly the main draw and something Epic is hoping that players won't be able to resist. It would be kind of cool if they modified Calamity with an "on fire" mode as well to match, but that does not appear to be the case. Still, she looks like a worthy Cube monster-hunting Van Helsing all the same, if you don't want to shell out $30 for Deadfire.
Deadfire is in the shop for the next 36 hours, but I would be amazed if we don't constantly see him cycle through the event which is going to last at least a week, if not more. So if you don't get him now, you should have another chance or two before this event wraps. But if you don't get him? He may turn into the next rare Skull Trooper, and may not show up again for another year, if ever.
Personally, I don't know if I'll pick up Deadfire, because I've spent so much money on skins already and so I need to be real selective about my purchases now. And leaks from this patch show a pair of glow-in the-dark Day of the Dead skins that are clearly going to be must-haves, so I may need to just wait for those and leave this monster hunter to others. But I do hope to see more and more reactive skins going forward, as I think it's a great concept and makes these outfits far more attractive than others.
What do you think, are you going to pick up Deadfire for yourself?

I loved this skin, it's worthy enough to spend 2,000 Vbucks on it
