If me and my 2nd controller go into a private game invite someone in start it then get them to back out and then i play solo . Will this still count on leaderboards?

Nope because soon as there is less then 2 players it automatically kicks you to pre-gamelobby, and when you leave with the 2nd controller it also takes out the real account holder (1st Player).

I think he might mean keeping the 2nd player (on the 2nd controller) in the game, so that both players are local, I'm not sure if this works, but it should keep you in the game at very least.
