so my jtag is on the truck and should arrive here later this afternoon. I want to get a jump on things and get my external HDD set up as much as possible. I've already got it formatted to FAT32.
I've already got a large collection of backups from my last xbox. can I transfer them to the hdd with out the jtag? How? I am thinking xbox backup creator, but do i need to patch them?
what kind of file structure do I need on the HDD?

Make some files on the root .

. You can put Xex menu and freestyle dash on your HDD now so that when your jtag arrives you plug your HDD in and its all set up.
