Put the modding prospect aside for a moment, i think jtags are worth the money just for the fact that you can play games off the hdd, i got a basic xenon and a 500gb usb external hdd with like 100 games on it from renting games from blockbuster

like other people are saying do NOT buy a jtag simply to host lobbies, its not profitable unless
you are well known and KV's are worthless atm. There are TONS of other stuff you can do w/ a jtag
(Emulators,Linux,etc..) and id suggest you look into other things besides hosting.. that would definitely make it worth the money
