Hey guys.
I'm starting this thread for those of you that don't know what a virus is, or how it can affect you and your computer.
Lesson 1:
Intro to Viruses
First of all. A virus is a malicious program that is used to steal your identity, credit cards, address, and all that good stuff. Or there are the ones that destroy your computer. (Not fun, trust me.) As Dherp said, it's installed on your computer for different things. Thank you for the extra Info Dherp!
Now, for Lesson 2.
The types of Viruses:
There are Many types of viruses. The most common of which, is called a "Trojan."(No, not the condoms you horndog.) Anyway, those are mainly Keyloggers. Keyloggers are essentially, what they sound like. They get installed onto your computer, and log your keystrokes. It's how accounts get hacked, Credit Cards get stole, Phone Numbers, everything.
But they're fairly easy to get rid of. Use AVG, Avast, MalwareBytes or even WindowsDefender. Those are all Free Anti-Virus programs. AVG, in my opinion, is the best free one. But that's just me. Anyways, Now there's a Virus called a "RAT."
RAT Stands for Remote Access Trojan, OR Remote Administration Tool. It gives the host of the virus complete control of your computer. They can see through your webcam, if you have one. Control your mouse, delete your files, type messages to you that pop up in black boxes randomly. These, are the worst, in my opinion.
There are also viruses that aren't really viruses. I'll explain what I mean. You can get a popup, (from opening an email from an unknown sender) that will say "Your computer is infected! Download now to Get rid of the virus!" Well, that download you just did to get rid of the virus, just gave you the virus. The only way to get rid of it: System Restore.
Lesson 3:
Malware and other 'mini-viruses.'
There are many different types of Viruses that do not steal information, all they do is just run and increase your CPU usage. Over time, your computer is bound to crash. Not to hate on porn, but the most common places for those are: Porn websites. Porn sites, are FILLED with adware, malware, and spyware. Don't EVER click an Ad on a Porn Website. Chances are, you're going to get one of those CPU eating monsters.
Lesson 4:
Getting Rid of Them
There are many different ways to get rid of viruses. Anti-virus, which protects you from them, also gets rid of them, if they manage to get onto your computer. You could go into your task manager, and find the virus, by searching every file one by one. Or there is simply System Restore.
Update
Just a random update. Some places that are bound to have viruses:
Torrents. Main Cause of Viruses. If you play RuneScape, videos on YouTube claiming to have AuthCode Generators. Most likely a program binded with a Keylogger or RAT.
Porn Sites,(Stated above)
Phishing Sites. Some have Malware.
Thats about it for now.
Will keep you all posted.
Thanks to:
dherp, for replying on this forum. He explained a little better on some things.
That's all to thank right now
Remember, Scan EVERYTHING you download. To be quite honest, I still scan stuff I download from Microsoft.com. It's habit, but still a safety precaution.
If you don't know how to Scan a File you've downloaded, look at the pictures.
For example, I'm going to be using a .Rar file.
I downloaded a Call of Duty Renders pack.
It's a ,rar file, in order to Scan, you simply double-click the file, and it will Open up in WinRaR.

You just simply Click "Virus Scan"
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
And then a little Window Pops up, asking you which Anti-Virus to use.
I have AVG, so I'll be showing you with that.
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Click OK, and scan. Me, personally, if I get 1 infection, out of, say 200 items. I delete the thing i've downloaded. That one thing, could be the worst virus you've ever had.
As you can see below, the PSD pack is clean. I'm comfortable using it.

Avast [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Avira [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Thank you for reading, and remember, Be safe with your downloads.

It's actually a standard windows message with different text that pops up. Some have chat features. The worst one I can think of that might fit in that category is "Zeus" which was made to steal banking info. Of course, it's easy to catch because of the webpanel and usually doesn't take long to get closed down. RAT users can also steal files. It's how some sources to certain programs have been leaked.
Your definition of virus is wrong. A virus is an unwanted program that has installed it itself onto your system, generally has a startup method so that it can keep running, and usually has a means of propagating itself to increase the amount of victims.
