The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system.

thats just completely wrong


the difference is that a 64 bit machine can run more programs and run them faster, it has nothing to do with ram, but a 64 bit machine does support up to 64gb of ram as 32 on support 4... so tha main difference is speed. but i dont notice much on my computers

Actually a 32-bit computer can only see and use upto 3GB of RAM.

64-bit can see and use past 3GB.

So if you have 4GB of RAM in your computer you'll need a 64-bit OS to use it all.

Clarification

32bit utilises ~3.5gb of ram
64bit can utilise more (4gb+)

however there is less compatability with 64bit as some programs don't support it but this is becoming less and less of an issue as 64bit is starting to lead the way. I would recommend 64 bit as it also gives you room to upgrade in the future

as far as pc gaming is concerned there is no real difference between 64bit and 32bit except older games may not work on 64bit. 64bit would only improve performance in a game if it was using more than the amount of ram 32bit can handle. Finally there is a tweak that allows 32 bit to use 4gb+ but i cant remember what its called

64 Bit and 32 bit also has something to do with the way the CPU's way of handling Binary.
