1st way would be, try to sign into PSN

Or you could go to Settings>System Settings> System info

yes, but in order to go back to original you may have to put your ps3 into recovery mode

To do this

Make sure your ps3 is off

Press and hold the power button and dont let go until it turns on and then off again

Let go of button

Press and hold power button again until you hear 3 beeps, let go, you will now boot into recovery mode

Make sure the original 3.55 update from sony is on your usb first before doing this

Then select system update on the recovery menu
