The M1 Garand was the main service weapon for the US Army during WWII.

Yes, you are correct about it being in COD WAW.
The M21 EBR is the product of the evolution of the M14 that is over 40 years in the making. The M14 replaced the M1 Garand after the Korean War, it was then replace by the M16A1 during the Vietnam War.
The M14 was turned into the M21 and was reconfigured into a sniper rifle. They bedded the stock, gave it a forged and accurized barrell and placed a scope on top (ART I then the ART II). In the late 80's to early 90's the M21 was replaced by the M24 sniper rifle. The M21's were kept around for spotters to use.
After the ivasion of Afghanistan several AAR's (After Action Reviews) were done and it was found the need to have a Designated Marksman at the Platoon level. They brought back the M21 and gave it a new look. The modified stock is made by a company called Sage International, out of Michigan.

You can also purchase them their manufactuers homepage, Springfield Armory.

That is the reason they are seen in MW2. They are currently being deployed with the US military in all combat zones.
I hope this helped
