Use MCEdit just open up you're world with it and drag it back into minecraft and BAM you're playing with you're edited inventory, its takes like 2 minutes.

Well I'm not sure if there is an editor for real time modding but the tool "Mine Edit" works great if you just want to edit your inventory.
To be honest it wouldn't be that much slower than real time because the .dat file of your character opens fast and it takes like 1 second to save and open a Minecraft world. So I'd just recomend using a normal editor because real time could cause lag (if there even is one)

yeah :p

The newest version of Mine Edit has every object in the game so it makes constructing fancy homes, bases, towers, cities, etc.... a breeze and you can come up with sone pretty cool stuff.

Also, if you have not done so I'd also recomend you downloading and installing a texture pack for your Minecraft world and make it look nice and fancy

I'd post some links now but it would take a while because I'm on my iPod
