This month we have seen the demise of one of the most beloved franchises ever created...Guitar Hero. Many are saying that Activision is to blame because of their saturation of the market with 3 or 4 Guitar Hero titles a year.
At first Guitar Hero started out with 2 publishers (Red Octane and Harmonix), COD started out with 1 (Infinity Ward but added Treyarch for COD3). Guitar Hero then became successful and Harmonix was purchased by MTV. Then Neversoft came into the picture and soon after Budcat Creations and Vicarious Visions (Thats 4 publishers which = More Games). Once multiple titles were being released, sales dropped drastically and now in 2011 we are left with no new Guitar Hero's this year.
Call of Duty has 4 Publishers as of now (Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Sledghammer, and Raven). Guitar Hero had 1 best selling game after all 4 publishers were in place and then sales started their downward descent. So if this is any indication we could see the demise of Call of Duty in a matter of 5-6 years. Now it is obvious that this franchise is more popular then GH but if more publishers are added and there is more than one iteration of COD a year then the game will lose it's luster and the franchise as a whole will disappear.

Are you sure Raven is a publisher now? I knew sledgehammer was but they are combining with Infinity ward, not making a complete new game by themselves. Plus, it's one call of duty per year anyways. I say it'll be awhile.

I dont think so, COD have always been some of the best games in gaming history. If the next COD makes you "pay to play" then i think sales will drop but other than that i think people will continue buying COD games
