We Will be showing you how to Fix Open Tray Error

You will see lots of Tutorials on how to do it, But most of them just cause your xbox to even more useless. Some are good but becaurfull of others.

Tools You will Need For Opening An Xbox

  • Precision Screwdriver
  • Torx 10 Screwdriver



How to Tweak & Replace BenQ & LiteOn Laser's





Tools for Tweaking Your Drive
  • Star Screwdriver (Phillips)
  • Precision Screwdriver
  • NO MORE THAN 1MM AT A TIME IF NOT USING A MULTIMETER





How to Tweak or Raplace Hitachi and Samsung Laser's







Multimeter
For everyone that owns a multimeter, LOOK HERE


  • Now get your multimeter and set it to 20K (ohms). Connect it to the two connections on the pot.(doesnt matter about positive and negative, any way round will do) and take the reading.The reading for the DVD pot is around 3.4k ohms > 4.2k ohms.

  • Once you have taken this reading, write it down somewhere safe just in case you want to put it back to the original setting. Now its time to calibrate the pot and reduce the resistance (increase the power of the laser) and hopefully eliminate those dirty disc errors and open tray problems.I would recommend reducing the pot by upto 100 ohms at a time, keep trying until your discs read, DONT REDUCE THE POT TO LESS THAN 2.8K as you will risk burning out your laser.


  • Using your screw driver, rotate the pot clockwise a fraction at a time , remember a FRACTION at a time, and read the pot again, like I said, keep reading the pot with the multimeter and reduce it by 100ohms or so each time until you find a good setting. Ive found that around 3.0k > 3.4k ohms works ok. But feel free to experiment (be sensible)

I have personally used this method to repair 100's of Xbox's, always 1st stop before purchasing a brand new laser. Or even replacing your console altogether- you know who you are you lazy more money than sense people :p

I see soo many new topics started about Open Tray Error that its about time we had a 1 stop reference point available here on TTG

very detailed tutorial as I always see these topics saying "Open disc drive error HELP!"

So this should clear things up for some people.

Yes this cover's that too, basically any disc reading error's that are associated to the laser. But there are times when it can be down to the rail's not being aligned correctly in some LiteOn's - very hard to tell but new laser's won't work
