I give you part of my college assignment that covers virus. Its directed at a company but it relates to everyone.

DONT COPY THIS, ITS ALL MY OWN WORK! DONT WANT TO GET DONE FOR PLAGIARISM, IF SOME KID COPY'S THIS AND USES IT AS HIS OWN!

Virus
Overview of Virus + the Impact of Virus

When talking about viruses you are talking about a significant way for people to cause harm to your system and cause considerable damage, often without you knowing, they are there or there doing anything. Viruses themselves are not the thing that does the damage, viruses are the delivery method for things like; Malware, Trojans, Worms. A virus can get into your system in many different ways. Most commonly, you bring the virus into your system, by this I mean you download a file that has been infected with a virus, or someone inserts a memory stick or USB device that has been infected meaning that you also are infected. The virus then may also be carrying malware or a piece of code or software that will then do harm to your system. Viruses are self-replicating, meaning that when they are in the system they will duplicate themselves many times to infect your system and make it harder to remove the virus. When you download a virus mostly you will need to activate it, so you would need to run the program or open the file.

Trojans are a threat to your system that was carried along with the virus. The virus got on your system and was carrying a Trojan that then infected your PC. Trojans are a piece of software or code that pretends to be something else, for example, a program that will fix your registry. This is a program that is pretending you have a problem and is pretending to be the fix. However, it is not a fix but a Trojan. When in your system it can then steal information and send it to the original creator. It can open backdoors or ports so a hacker can connect and then even infect you more. Trojans do not replicate like viruses however as there so effective they dont need to. To get infected with a Trojan you would need to run the application its is hiding its self as. In other words it is harmless until you activate it. Worms are a threat to your system that was carried along with the virus. The virus got on your system and was carrying a worm that then infected your PC. Worms spread themselves over the network and can often have no noticeable effect. However, most of them will corrupt files and make the PC un-usable by the end of it. If you were infected with a worm then you would not need to active it as you do with virus and Trojans. When it is on your system, it can activate and replicate its self. Scareware is a form of malware, It makes the user believe they have a massive fault and unless they download the program to correct the problem then there PC will b infected and then will break. Most commonly, the user will download the program that will say it will fix the PC however; the program will then infect them with a worm or malware.

How likely is the threat of a Virus?

Viruses are very likely as there are so many of them; they are an even bigger threat as do not even need to be on the internet to be infected. Therefore, this means many users who do not go online so they do not have antivirus are at risk to infection. However, as you are a system that deals with online customers and does a lot online you are even more at risk. You have the added risk that people may take work home with them and if they are not protected effectively then they have a chance of bringing an infection to you.

How to prevent Viruses

There are many things that you can try to prevent viruses. However, there is no completely effective way that you can prevent viruses short of never going on the internet or letting anyone plug USBs in to your PC. There are ways that you can reduce the risk of being infected. One of the main ways that you can do this is to have an anti virus that you keep updated. This means that your PC is protected with the latest information about the threats to the PC. Most anti-virus include a firewall, this stops people attempting to send you files via the open ports in the network. Keeping software and the OS up to date is a great way to stop viruses, as the updates are removing exploits that the virus may exploit and use to hide its self. When using USBs there should be server software that checks the hardware that stops the USB from infecting the network. Doing back-ups means that if you are infected with a virus then you are able to go back to a point where there was no threat to the system. In addition, when you restore you will most likely know what caused the virus so you can prevent it.
