you have to update to the new dash and yes you have to to update to the new dash to do system link lobbies

No you dont have to update to play new games.
Yes you have to update to do system link lobbies.

You need kinect to play games that have the ap2.5 check on the disc, this is a kinect dash feature so assassins creed brotherhood, NFS hot pursuit, fable 3 etc will only play on the latest dash. Homefront however does not have ap2.5 so is playable.

You must use dash 126XX to play the ones that have it.

Secondly, you can system link on any dash so long as you have the correct Title Update for that game.
