If I was using a hdd that loaded an xbox1 game just fine on a retail, would I still need to do this for the game to work on a jtag? Or is that a separate problem that the game won't start.

If it is a retail HDD you do not need to do this as it already had the HDDX partition.

Yup. Says update, and if I cancel it goes to black screen (updating obviously doesn't work). I assume it will still not work even if I do this hack and run it without the systemupdate folder. It worked fine on my other xbox with that hdd, but it died a few days ago. I'm assuming a dashlaunch problem or something.

So... Have you tried deleting the $systemupdate folder?
And, if it is halo 2 then it is for the original xbox. Right? So I am assuming this update is nothing major. Just something small that allows use of xbox1 games.

No, since you need to do the compatibility hack to run an original game off of something other than a disk (and I assume it still won't work), and doing the update doesn't work, no original xbox servers. I might as well do the hack, my cheap live box I thought was untouched was horribly repaired and died. Thanks for the help so far, but no one seems to have seen it do this before.
