Many argue that the Supermoon tonight (March 19, 2011) is of no relevance to either what will happen 2012, the Japan earthquake/tsunami or any other natural disasters that can or did already happen these past few weeks. However, supermoons in the past have closely coincided with the worst disasters in recent history:

The 2005 Indonesian earthquake/tsunami that took with it over 230,000 people in December 2004, hit about two weeks prior to the Supermoon then on Jan 10th, 2005
The equally-catastrophic earthquake in Haiti on January 2010 (killing upwards of 200,000), hit several weeks before the Supermoon that uccored on January 30th, 2010
In most recent memory just prior to the northern Japan earthquake, the Canterbury earthquake near Christchurch, New Zealand hit. This was in mid February, and the supermoon then was not the major once-ever-19-years Supermoon, but rather the peak of the monthly cycle that corresponds with the Moon being in its closest position to earth for that given month. Overall however, last months supermoon was indeed super, since it was the second-closest pass of the moon in 19 years.
The absolute closest will be tonight, March 19th, 2011, and just last week (within the two-week window common Supermoons), Japan received its largest earthquake ever. It was the fifth largest earthquake in recorded history.

Coincidence? I think not. Tonight will be the Moons closest pass to earth in 19 years, and will appear 15% bigger and 30% brighter than on any other given night. It is very eerie to us looking from an outside perspective, though its much more sad and devastating and horrible for those actually affected and they are no doubt pondering if this is indeed the end of the world. Being mindlessly alarmist and doomsaying is not the goal, but one must wonder what is causing all this ruckus on earth. There has NOT been a time more violent and catastrophic due to natural disasters on Earth in history that can be found.
