Last time I checked you can go ONLINE on Halo 3 without gold. Atleast I can.

I meant I can play ranked matchmaking also

Could be fake, However this happened to a few of my friends on XBL. One had xbl for a week when his ran out. Another had a month trial and got 2 months out of it. Its very un-likely, but it does happen.
