Open Xbox 360 Controller
This tutorial will guide you through the simple process of opening the Xbox 360 Controller(wired or wireless). Approximate time 2-4 minutes.
What you will need for this tutorial:
Security Torx T8 Driver
Simply remove the screws as shown on the following spots. Don't forget the 'hidden' screw underneath the bar code behind the battery cartridge (it is shown in the picture). This one gets most people the first time. Once this is done place or hold the controller with the top facing down and remove the bottom half of the controller (shell). It is done this way so none of the buttons fall out when taking it apart. Just take your time and you will have it apart in no time.

Xbox 360 Wired and Wireless Controller AXBY SMD LED Light Mod
This tutorial shows you the best and fastest way to light your AXBY buttons on any Xbox 360 Controller. This does not require you to cut out the middle of the buttons like other tutorials or fill the button with glue! Approx. Time: 20 minutes
The first thing you need to do is take apart your controller so you have just the board. Please check the link below to do this if you do not already know how:
Disassemble Controller
Once this is done you will need the following items:
4 x 0603 SMDs
Wire
Solder
Soldering Iron
Hot Glue Gun
Resistors (make sure you have the correct values)
Once you have all the materials and the controller apart then it is time to begin.
Step one - Wiring the SMDs - Repeat this step 4 times, once for each button
The only tricky part about this mod is solder the two wires to the smd, but if you can do that you are good to go. I will help explain the best way to do it. First put a little bit of solder on your soldering iron and then pick up the smd and look at the bottom of it (where the pads are you solder to). Touch each side with the soldering iron (has a little solder on it) so that you can put a tiny bit of solder on each side of the led. Once this has been done then you will need to get your wire (preferably 30 awg). When you have your wire out, strip a very small amount of the insulation off of one end. 'Tin' the end you stripped with solder (put a little solder on the wire). Do this same thing to the other wire. Now get your SMD back in the tweezers and look at the pads you have 'Tinned' already. You will need to touch the wire on the out side of the SMD and just heat the smd and the wire and there should be enough solder there to melt them together and make a good connection. It may not look pretty, but it will get the job done!!! Do this for both wires. It should look something like this.

Step Two - Put the SMDs into the AXBY buttons of the Xbox 360 Controller
Now that you have it wired up you need to put the smd into the button. You can fit it into the button like this. Instead of placing the wires coming out of the buttons like shown you will need to cut out a little slot (different than the one shown) for the wires to go through. Once this is done you will not even be able to tell there is a light in there when you press the button! Again please read what was stated just above and do not do what the picture shows, but cut a different (new) slot. This can be done with a dremel or wire cutters. You may also use a dab of glue just to hold the smd in place inside the buttons. Just use a small amount and don't let it get above the four posts show or the button will not press right.

Step Three - Power LEDs
Here is where you should power the leds - Make sure you choose the right resistors so you don't burn your leds out for your specific setup.
Now carefully put it all together, making sure the wires are out of the way and test it! You will get something like this if it's done correctly!

Xbox 360 Ring of Light Controller Mod
This tutorial will help you change the lights in the ring on the wired or wireless Xbox 360 Controller. Depending on your soldering skills the estimated time is 10 minutes and up.
What you will need:
20-30 Watt Soldering Iron (we, at niktronix use 30 Watt)
Rosin Core 60/40 .40 Solder
Soldering Stand (highly recommended)
Tweezers (can't do it without these)
Four 0603 SMDs in your choice of color
Xbox 360 Controller
Look at our Polarity Guide if you don't know the which side is + and - for your 0603 SMD
Removal of the SMDs/Lights
We are going to use a method that we like to call 'floating' the SMD off. This involves putting a decent amount of solder on the tip of your iron and then dragging it across the edge of the SMD where the two solder points are. You want to melt both connections connections at the same time otherwise the SMD will not 'float off'. Do not apply excessive pressure to the SMD with the iron (a tiny bit is acceptable, but not a lot) otherwise you risk tearing up a pad. Sometimes adding a little bit of solder to each end of the SMD before trying to 'float' it off will help considerably. Once you remove all four lights then make sure the soldering pads are clear of excessive solder (you don't want mounds solder on the pad or you will have trouble soldering the leds flat).

Installation of New Lights/SMDs
After all of the original Lights are removed you must then put on the new ones. Get out your SMDs that you have purchased and remove only one of them at a time, otherwise you will most likely lose one. When you have one removed pick it up with the tweezers and look to see which side is positive. Now that you know the orientation of the SMD, position it accordingly for installation with it laying flat (lens facing directly up). We are going to solder the positive side first so add a little solder to the + pad that you are going to solder to first. Grab the negative side of the SMD with tweezers and hold the positive side of the SMD just in above the appropriate pad. Once you have it in the position you want, hold it tightly and melt the solder that you just added to the pad and put the SMD into the solder so it sticks to the SMD. Remove the soldering iron and let the solder cool down and harden then remove the tweezers. It is important to remeber that you should not apply heat to the board or the SMDs very long or you could cause damage. You should only apply heat for a couple of seconds at a time at the most. Repeat this process for all of the corners and you are done!! Test and Enjoy!
If you have a CG controller (please check our guide in the tutorials section) then blue and UV will be dim (or hardly show up) on a wireless controller and other colors may also be slightly dimmer than maximum capacity. This is due to the lack of voltage at these points in the controller and has nothing to do with the leds.
