What's the difference between whether you do it online or not? After you download the game to your hardrive, you can still reconnect to live and host the modded lobby online. You only have to go offline while you actually install the game. And I honestly don't think people knew about it, because I have looked EVERYWHERE for this, and couldn't find it anywhere.

Yes, you have to install it. It will NOT work directly from the disk. Also, if you don't install it, you can't go back online with the disk in.
