Most of what you've explained of them, i have found the opposite. This group may have disperssed by now but there was alot of speculation that the illuminati were behind the assasination of president Abraham lincon...
Ive heard they are a group that keep the balance of the whole of society, for all we know every world leader may be a member, this could link to the high levels of secrecy involving bin ladens supposed execution. Though i personally think the American goverment has not killed him at all as they have changed the story around five times, when it was filmed live (meaning there would only be one concrete story) and they decided to throw the apparent dead terrorist into the vast ocean, where no one would ever find him, meaning they wouldnt try to. Scetchy stuff. Or it could not excist, bin ladens dead and we're all crazy.
