Hold both the sleep and home buttons for like 15 seconds or so until the apple appears. If that doesn't work then you definitely need to restore.

You most likely have a hardware problem with your 30 pin dock connecter. Try blasting some air into it with one of those air canisters.

Its completely safe. Just restore like normal in iTunes and you'll be good to go.
