Just got disconnected from Xbox live, on signing back in I got an update

Any ideas on what the update was for and why my friend cant update

"Communication with Xbox Live servers has been interrupted"

Has been working fine for last few days

i reset my xbox turn it on and no offer to update??? cant join friends as they have updated
