If i want my account to be level 50 in halo do i have to recover my account on the jtag and go online or can i just be in the same lobby as my jtag

so i put my account in my jtag go into a custom game then go into say a lone wolfs and rank up and ill be 50 in that?

in order to get level 50 in halo 3 do i have to waste a keyvault online?
