Over the years, I have seen countless covers of various songs and most of them were horrible. If you are planning on covering a song on youtube, follow this guide for a much better performance.
First:
Song choice
Pick a song. But more importantly, pick a song that fits your tone of voice. For example, it is not ideal to have a deep voice and cover a Justin Bieber song [insert bieber joke here] . Pick a song where you will be at ease to cover it.
Second:
Practice!
Practicing is unquestionably the most important part of covering a song as best as possible ! You will want to practice as much as possible leading up to when you are going to record the song ! This will include but is not limited to Do re mi fa so la ti do, practicing the song, etc.
Third:
Pitch
What ruins the song cover for most people is the pitch. Often times, people will either be too deep or too high for a song. Don't be the person who tries to make your voice deeper for a song so you don't sound like a 12 year old. What I suggest you do is listen to the song repeatedly, find the pitch, go into the program sound recorder ( some computers come with it ) record yourself singing the song. It will sound bad at first, but with some adjustments it will improve. Once you are in synchronization sound wise, repeat this process repeatedly. I suggest doing this daily so you can "memorize" what it's supposed to sound like.
Fourth:
Criticism
Before you actually record yourself and put it on youtube, you may want to record it and show it to other people so you can collect some criticism. Criticism greatly helps you improve and though some may be bad it can make you better.
Fifth:
Recording
When it comes down to recording your video, a phone camera isn't the best choice. Attempt to get it to 720p because this is where it has good quality, and not much loading time. A Flip HD camcorder and a good hand camcorder that can record in HD is a great choice. You can find affordable, good recorders on ebay, amazon, etc.
Tips:
* Don't stand there while you're singing and do nothing. Put some enthusiasm in and move around, don't be boring
*Try not to reply to the comments on your video especially if it's negative, people will look at you differently
* DON'T put boxes, links, writing inside you video I can tell you first hand it is extremely aggravating . If you have links you want to post, put them in the info.
* Put the subscription link in clear sight so if they want to subscribe, it's easy.
* Eat foods that will make singing easier. For example, salty chips is bad for your vocal chords and will hurt your threat. Drink a lot of water at room temperature.
* Be positive, even if there is not many views at least you tried your best and gave it your all [:
