There has been a lot of speculation on what the new wonder weapon does. And if you look in the taste of escaltion trailer u can see that the wonder weapon changes the zombies into humans. But if you look at the end of the trailer u can see danny trejo chopping off heads of zombies that aren't wearing anything and appear to have skin. So i think the new "human zombies" act as monkey bombs and the zombies go after them to attack.

I'm guessing it has a cooling time so you don't shoot everything in sight.
