Ok, what you should do in-game:
Reduce rendering distance to "tiny" or "short"
Change graphics to fast
What to do on your computer:
Close all un-necessary programs.
Run a disk clean up (Gets rid of un-used files, temporary files (May take up a fair portion of disk space, I had 3.8GB of it at peak )
Transfer all un-used data to something such as an external hard drive - This means your HDD will not have to read so much data to 'find' the files to run minecraft.
Restart your PC/Laptop/whatever if you've been opening a lot of applications, etc. - this may help with the lag.
Upgrade the amount of RAM in your computer.
Upgrade your graphics card (PC only).
That's all I can think of for now. If it still runs slowly PM me and I'll get back to you with some more suggestions.
