This is by far the easiest way and will not endanger your xbox at all. It is a memorex optidisc lens cleaner. This has saved my xbox and costs about $8

it has small brushes on the back that clean the lens which is most likely the problem if you are getting the "open tray" error every time you attempt to play a game.
I got mine at Wal-mart, im guessing its available at most large stores.
