This is addressed to all the people in the board working for rep:
Why? I've tried to work out why exactly anyone would work for a number but think of a single reason. Think about it, you're spending your time and your effort to make something and getting nothing in return. How does that make sense? I'm assuming you probably do it so that the person you're making it for will respect you and appreciate it. I can assure you they more than likely don't. If they had any respect for you they would pay for the work. All you're doing is wasting time and letting people walk all over you. Think about it like this - you've done all this work, spent hours (possibly days) of your life on it all and the moment you leave this website, boom, you've gained nothing but practise from it. Yes, the practise you gained is valuable but you could easily have gained more alongside it. Even if you only charge say 50p for your work, at least you've earned something.
So use this great little phrase from a conference I was watching yesterday regarding clients not paying - "F*ck you. Pay me."

I understand exactly what you mean.
It's stupid to built free work.
You earn nothing whatsoever.

What's worse is when they don't pay and you did something really good. That's why you have to watermark EVERYTHING.
