He died because
1. He didn't fulfill his contract because Dutch killed himself
And
2. They army was using you to wipe out the gang you were in and the killed you as you were the last member of the gang

I love R.D.R and was kinda mad that he had to die at the end but the way it carried on was genius who better to take up the mantle that John Marston's Son Jack he will never be his father but who cares the game is awesome.
