Best idea for a newbie to PS would be hammer the tutorials you can find on any of the search engines.

I would throw you some of my tutorials (ones i use not created) but they are mainly wallpaper size as I like to work on larger pieces now.

But dont just try sig tuts maybe look at larger tutorials for wallpapers, typography, photomanips and such.

Anything you do will teach.
YOU WILL MAKE MISTAKES.....and you will learn from them so dont give up
