The main idea and reason the the world will supposibly "end" is because the Sun, moon and Earth will align perfectly with the center of our galaxy.

The thing is this actually happened in 2006 and won't happen again for another million years.

Also it's just when the Mayan calender ends because they didn't for see the use for making it any longer. Just like the calender on your phone only goes so far, there is just no use in making the calender go forever.
