Heres another solution that MIGHT work..
Do you have the Windows XP Installation disc? You can put it in repair which will basically replace all the Major System files including whatever is corrupted. You wont lose anything but you'll have to go through all the updates again :/
EDIT: Make sure you put it in REPAIR.. NOT REFORMAT!

i had a similar problem were i got a virus and my laptop kept crashing so i have to completly reset it for it too work
so i dont know wether you have to do the same but if you do then it will wipe every single thing
