COLLINSVILLE, Ill. -- It's a trend that's been around for years.

Now saggy, baggy pants are rubbing some people in Collinsville, Illinois the wrong way.

Liz Dalton sits on Collinsville's city council.

She is proposing an ordinance that would make it illegal to wear sagging pants in public.

"First offense, if a person won't listen to the police when they tell you pull your pants up, they will be fined and it will be a $100 fine," she says.

Repeat offenders could face fines of up to $300 and 40 hours of community service.

Dalton says she has received backing from two other council members and other leaders in the community.

"I have talked to the principal of our high school," she says. "We do have a strict dress code and he was very much in favor of it and hopes it gets passed, along with the school board and the school board president."

Collinsville Mayor John Miller is against the proposed ordinance.

"It's a few people that dislike what they see, and rather than dealing with it, they want to make an issue out of it. I really don't see an issue here," he says.

He doesn't want to see police officers wasting their time writing tickets for fashion.

"They should be out fighting crime, and not fighting saggy pants," he says.

The issue will be brought up for a vote during the July 11th city council meeting.

Three out of five council votes are needed in order to make it an ordinance.
