RioT's Guide to Making Signatures
Here I will list the most important things that you need to know while making signatures or planning a signature. I will try and update this thread as much as possible with many more things if they come to mind. User's may also request for something to be put on here ;)
Getting a Good Render.
One of the single most important things that you need for a signature is a great render. A great render will have a fully transparent background without any other colors from the background still on the very edge of the render that isn't suppose to be part of the render. A great source for renders is PlanetRenders.net. This site has thousands of pre-rendered images for you to use. Also, try and get a render that is not to bright or dark.
Coloring.
A good signature has colors that blend togather, like pink and white for example. Pink is a lighter color along with white so they will blend together well in a signature. For examples, colors that would not blend to gather would be Blue and Red. Those colors look nothing like each other they never will. Try and consider the color of your render while making you Gradient Map, which I will talk about next.
Gradient Maps.
Gradient Maps are also one of the single most important things to consider while making your signature. To make a gradient map go to the bottom of the layers panel and click on the little circle that has one side dark and one side light. Then click on "Gradient Map". Choose colors that flow with your render. For example, if you have a blue render, your would not want a red gradient map. Say if you have a yellow render, you can mix thing's up a bit and make a orange to purple gradient map. After you make a gradient map that looks well on your signature, go over to where it says "Normal" on the layers panel and change it to Soft Light or Overlay. You may need to change the opacity of the gradient map to make you signature show up more clearly.
Fonts / Font Placement.
Another important part in making Signatures is the placement of the text and the font of the text. If your sig is more of a calm style, you will want more of a simple looking font. If you sig is less calm, you will want kind of an "actiony" style font. A great place to download font is Dafont.com. This site has 1000's of free fonts for you to use. Also try and make your text blend in with the signature, don't make the color of the text completely opposite of the color of your sig. A way to make your text blend in well is to sat the color to white and change where it says "normal" on the layers panel to "overlay" or "soft light". If it still doesn't fit in, try messing around with the opacity of the text.
A Simple Border.
I would recommend put a simple border on your sig. What I usually do is I make two very short and very wide rectangles. Next, I drag one to the bottom of the sig, and one to the top. Doing something as little as this makes a big different in your sig.
Signature Background.
The MOST important part of your sig is the background. To start off simple, just duplicate the render 10 times, and just drag them everywhere in the background of the sig. Next, put the original render layer on top of all of the duplicated layers. After that merge all of the duplicated layer to gather then go to "filter", "blur, Gaussian blur and just change the radius size up until you can't tell that the background is the original render. You will also want to add some brushes and C4D's to the background. What I prefer to do is get a stock background image, and make it blend in with the render.
Lighting.
You are going to want a source of light in your sig. You don't want one side of your render to be bright, while the rest of your sig is dark. A way to fix this is to click on the brush tool and then click on the dissolved brush. Then you are going to want to make sure that the foreground color is white. After that, change the brush size to whatever you feel necessary, and make a dot like it is the sun or something and move it to where it looks like the light of your render is coming from the sun/thing you made. Be sure to set the overlay on the sun to "overlay" or "soft light".
Hope this helped!
