It depends entirely on what exactly you want to do. Saying you just want to start programming is extremely vague.

I took my first programming class in grade 11 the teacher was crap. we barely got to applets. we didn't even learn how to use command prompt to get input from the user. I just took the basics from that class and then learned by myself. I was on applets halfway through the semester, while everyone still working with if statements and arrays. It was a sad course. But that is just my school. I have read some articles when searching for an idea where the students started making their own operating systems starting from the dos level to gui etc. There was also one where the students had to make an aquarium where you ad to feed the fish and they would age and die and new fish would be born. I wish I had went to one of those schools. But anyway, Good luck and if you are learning Java in that class I can help out if you have any troubles.

His tutorials are ok if you just need clarification on some things, but his tutorials are not great for beginners.

-Jordan- is correct. If you wan't to program something you need to think about what you would like to program (games, basic applications, complex applications, websites, etc). Please specify this before we can provide more information to help you out.

iOS apps - Objective-C

As for extensions for software it primarily depends on the software you're doing it for.
