But how do you know? The clip involving the QED has Insta - Kill activated. There is a possibility that the Claymore(s) had a wide enough blast range to kill all of them.

I don't think we've actually seen the QED in action. I think the clip ended before we could see it begin to work. Just like the Monkey Bomb, it doesn't deploy straight away.

That's just my opinion, but your idea is probably the best I've heard so far. Another way of reinforcing your idea is that Nikolai says something almost immediately after throwing the device.
