Images above clearly show a player putting on a mask (presumably a gas mask) and not a helmet. Best use is ofcourse against nova crawlers.
And obviously used only inside the moon base as the helmet can maybe protect you the same way, but the short inside Xbox trailer shows the D pad inventory with a helmet/mask at the top which would indicate you can toggle on/off these two.
