One of two possible things will happen:

1) There is more to the easter egg.
2) The reason the earth is in the sky is because Area 51 and Moon are close together on the map, if you were to noclip out you would be able to fly over to Moon and see the map and stuff. The destroyed Earth is in the sky because the sky on Area 51 and Moon are the same, there are just different lighting effects. It's pure coincidence.

Don't get me wrong, I hope there's more to it, after finishing it last night I was sure there was more to it, there had to be.

The earth isn't in the sky at the begining though only after you complete the eater egg.
