1. Topic:
Have a interesting topic, make sure you are saying what type of GFX they have to make and what the prize will be.
Example:
Desktop Background GFX Battle | Prize $3
2. Details:
Make sure you put all the details you want the graphic to have, such as font, render, etc.
3. Judges:
Pick 2-3 Judges, 3 opinions are better then one
4. Entries
Be sure to get as many entries as you can before you pick who wins
5. Feedback
Give every artist some feedback of their work. Even if it is bad. It will make them feel good and will interest other GFX artists to enter your contest
6. Monitoring
The worst type of GFX Battle is one where nobody is staying updated, check up on the battle a few times a day to see whats new.
7. Be Fair
When deciding who wins, don't pick whoever has a better shop or who has a cooler name. Judge the artwork truly

No offense but most of those aren't required or needed for a battle.
Someone has to start one first of all(sotw or whatever). Create a theme, due date and some basic rules. People post their work on the created thread and after a week or so a poll goes up and people vote.
That's a basic battle system and the most used system.
If you want feeback go to the gallery section and post something, this is the battle section. There's no need for judges as I stated a poll is the best option. No need to monitor unless you're the creator of the thread and unless you really want to, no one chooses a specific font unless it's a typo battle.
