Java sucks ****. Don't use Java.

Java isn't the best language, but it does have it's problems and key features to it. Every language has a strong point, and imo no language really sucks. For example java is good as it can be implemented into java applets for web-dev.

learn the basic of c++ procedural and OOP and from there on you can begin learning allegro,sdl,opengl and directx.
No one said its easy especially with game programming you need to be good at maths as there are a lot of calculations made, but following this path Id say you will do fine and trust me start learning this before you go college or university.

Nope, die Java, die. In all seriousness, I really do dislike Java.

agreed I do dislike using Java a lot, although it's rather easy to learn and learning more languages will be easier because all programming languages follow the same constructs it's just that they have different syntax. Java may be annoying because it's bad but if you know a lot of the programming languages that are around then you are most likely going to be the better candidate when it comes to applying for jobs. I'd say start with Java because it's simple then move on to c# and c++, learn a few of the scripting languages along the way such as Lua, Python, Boo etc. And remember everything that you do, keep it and put it into a portfolio with more experience you can keep refining this portfolio until you have a portfolio filled with some amazing work which will definitely be a major plus when applying for jobs.

You'll find a lot of tutorial for these around the web and may not be such a bad idea to pick up a few books to help. Just don't get too caught up in the learning the language it's much better to develop an understanding of the basic programming constructs because learning the syntax is the easy part.
